Dating back to the late 90s as a young Sri Lankan entrepreneur, Chamila Lopez was looking into opportunities in the coconut coir manufacturing industry. While closely observing the practices conducted by some exporters back then, Chamila discovered many flaws in the industry where customers were not getting the intended product from the coir manufacturers. There was an ever-widening gap between customer expectations of standards and quality against what the customer received from the coir manufacturers.
Chamila noticed that most of the existing coir products manufacturers in Sri Lanka were not professionals in the coir business and hence lack expertise and technical knowledge about the field causing inferior quality products being distributed in the marketplace. The underline motive of the coir manufacturers to disregard quality was to make false claims about product specification and deceive the end customer in order to increase profit margins.
Chamila perceived this as an opportunity and took immediate actions to improve quality and standardize the coir manufacturing process with transparency to make a positive impact in the industry.
Deficiency of adequate market data, research and new product development about coco coir in Sri Lanka made Chamila travel to several countries around the world to acquire advanced and new knowledge and expectations of farmers. In his visits, he had discussions with large-scale growers and agronomists to identify the issues encountered by the growers and other stakeholders in the industry. Chamila found out that the need of the growers differentiated from country to country and each grower expects to receive coir products catered to their country’s specific climate zones and crops.
Customer was Chamila’s top priority over profits and hence, was always concerned in offering the best for the grower. Consequently, after years of personalized research, Chamila ventured out to create one of the best coir products in the world under the brand name of BrownGrow, which allow growers the best value for their money devising convenience and harvest enriched profits.
In his journey Chamila consulted experienced professionals in the field to acquire their invaluable input. With over a decade of R&D, BrownGrow was incorporated and our team continues to develop innovative coir products suitable for specific climate zones and crops.
Consistency of the supply chain and the production process was optimized. All raw materials sourced were tested according to a standardized process, establishing the quality standards for coir grow medium as the first local coir manufacturer in Sri Lanka. With an improved, efficient and a quality-centric production process, BrownGrow managed to sustain the same high quality standards across its entire product range.
Chamila a man with generosity possesses an admirable quality of prioritizing others' needs ahead of his own and hence he is involved with a number of social responsibility projects in Sri Lanka as well as in several other countries to uplift the less privileged communities amongst us.
